Maintaining Your Garden While on Holiday
Your garden is probably at its peak at this time of year, but it’s also time for your summer holiday. What do you do? How do you make sure all your hard work isn’t undone and you don’t come home to a green mess? Maintaining your garden while you’re away from home is tricky, but not impossible. Of course half the battle is the preparation for your absence, which can really help your plants prosper while you’re away. Here are some top tips from our gardening experts at Prior to keep your garden blooming.
Before you go
There are a number of things you should do before you go away. Firstly, make sure you take care of weeds all over the garden. Weeds will compete with your plants for water, so it’s important to nip these in the bud to give your plant life the best start. It will also give you less of a job on your return!
If you have a lawn, you should also mow the lawn before you leave. Again this will save you the chore when you get home, but you can also use the grass clippings around the garden to soak up more water while you’re away and act as a mulch.
The last thing you need to do (and mustn’t forget!) is to water all of your plants and vegetables deeply. Do this as late as possible when you leave – if you leave in the evening you may wish to do a double watering on the day. Containers and pots should be moved into a shade position where they can still benefit from rain – this will slow evaporation from the soil.
DIY Watering Device
You may also wish to use a self-watering device while you’re on holiday, especially in patio pots and vegetables. This is easily made out of an empty plastic water bottle or glass wine bottle. Fill the bottle to the top with water, and while soil is already damp, plunge the bottle neck first into the pot, pushing deep. Once the initial water has been lost, the soil will draw out the moisture as it needs.
While you’re away
The only way to know what’s going on in your garden when you’re not there is if you have a garden buddy to spy on it for you. Why not ask a trusted neighbour to water the plants and check what needs doing while you’re away? You could always offer to return the favour.
If you prepare well, you can easily enjoy your holiday without worrying about garden maintenance!
