Improving Gardening for the Elderly
Gardening is something that seems to grow more interesting as we get older, despite not many youngsters finding much interest from it – it becomes more and more of a hobby for people as they get responsibility over their homes. Taking pride in a nice garden that you have nurtured and maintained is something that many people all over the UK will do, however with ageing also comes problems with mobility, and in turn can make gardening increasingly difficult. Despite being less mobile, this doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy you garden, and there are ways you can make your garden accommodate to your needs.
When you are keen on gardening and keeping your garden looking at its best, year round, you can end up constantly re-planting your plants. After difficult winters or just bad weather, it can sometimes cause your flowers and plants to die, ultimately resulting in you having to fix that. This costs money and time, not to mention the difficulty you repeatedly go through doing this job. Instead of buying plants that eventually wilt (never to be seen again) you could plant some flowers that blossom year after year, with very little effort and attention. Flowers such as; Coneflowers, Cosmos, Daylily’s, Yarrow’s Hens and Chicks. Each and every one of these flowers is hardier than most other garden plants – on top of this; they come off very aesthetically pleasing and will decorate your garden nicely.
Another task that can sometimes take a lot of work and sometimes can be tiring is cutting your grass, it is an arduous task which is inevitable for good upkeep on your Garden. Some people might say you can use lawn mowers that you can drive, rather than push – this might be feasible in some cases, however they can come at a cost and still mean you have to cut it manually. An alternative to this is having an artificial lawn, there are many artificial grass suppliers all over the UK – so wherever you are you will be able to find the service near you. Fake grass companies like Forever Green Lawns, offer artificial grass that are based in Kent, but supply the whole UK. The benefits of having artificial lawns in your garden consist mainly of the fact that it never dies and it stays green year round, it also requires little to no maintenance, no watering, pets friendly, as it never needs cutting.
With a garden comes the inevitable maintenance, this can be a pain for the elderly or less mobile – as your hobby you won’t want to let this hinder you, nor should it. To deal with difficult tasks ask a friend or family to take part with you and help you with anything that you can’t do. This will allow you to continue enjoying your hobby whilst simultaneously spending time with your family and friends, involving them in something you enjoy.
With all of this work going into your garden, it’s important to remember that it is an area you can use all year round. Make it usable all year round by adding a canopy, this will protect an area from the harsh weather in the winter and offer you some shade in the sun, it makes as an ideal companion to a flourishing garden.
