De-clutter And Reclaim Your Garage
When you open the garage door and realise there’s no longer room for the car it’s time to de-clutter and reorganise this valuable space. Experts say our garage is the most underutilized space in our homes.
A large majority of homes that are fortunate enough to have a garage the homeowner tends to use it as a dumping ground for things that don’t have a set place in the home and have the very good intention of ‘sorting it out later’. Well later has now arrived!
Organisation is key here you should store items in activity based groups so for example all DIY tools together, gardening tools, chemicals, Christmas decorations etc. this will make locating what you want easier. Make sure the items you use regularly are easy to access and the items which that are not used so often are stored out of the way.
When storing chemicals try and keep them in the original packaging and if you do decant them into new bottles/cans make sure they are labelled clearly. Keep these items out the reach of children or store in locked cupboards.
Start sorting through your possessions and get rid of items that are no longer of any use or are broken etc. Once you have a clear idea of what needs to be stored you can look into storage solutions like wall/ceiling hooks, overhead storage, shelving or cupboards/units.
If you have a pitched roof in your garage make the most of this space; consider adding some overhead flooring in the rafters, this area can then be accessed by a ladder. This out of the way space is perfect for items you not use that often.
Fitting either wall or floor cupboards are another good way of organising and storing items. Another compact solution is to fit a work surface and cupboards along the back wall of the garage with overhead units. You could even fit a sink into the work top which will be useful after a day’s gardening or for cleaning particularly dirty items like football boots!
Vertical storage on the garage walls is a great solution when space is limited, use hooks and shelving to maximise storage space. If adding shelves make sure they are fit for purpose and will be able to bear the weight of the items you are going to place on them.
Finally with everything now having a place make sure the garage is safe. With your garage now organised it may be a good time to replace your old garage door. There are many different styles on the market from space saving roller, sectional, side hinged to the traditional up and over doors, you will be able to find a new secure door which will not only protect your possessions, but it will enhance the look of your property.
A new garage door will instantly add curb appeal and value to your home.
